trentondevils.com - Coming off a strong showing in December including two exciting wins over the Elmira Jackals and Johnstown Chiefs to close out the calendar year, the Trenton Devils looked to keep the momentum high and carry their winning stride into the month of January.
After ringing in the new year with a thrilling overtime win against the Chiefs on December 31, the Devils would continue to have a reason to celebrate beginning with their first game of 2009 on January 2 against the Dayton Bombers. Down 2-1 heading into the third period, the Devils came from behind to win, 3-2, thanks to goals by Jeff Prough and Jim Henkel. This comeback victory marked the third of its kind on the season.
Trenton's rematch against Dayton the next night also proved to be memorable. Leading 2-1 after the first period, the Devils stepped onto the ice in full force in the second, unleashing a barrage of shots on Dayton goalie Paul Drew. The T-Devils knocked in six goals during the second period, setting a new team record, en-route to a decisive 8-2 victory over the Bombers.
Though the Devils would not resume play until January 9, the team was not without exciting news to share. On January 6, Trenton goalie Gerald Coleman was named ECHL Goaltender of the Week after going 4-0-0 upon his return from the injured reserve.
After earning a split with the Cincinnati Cyclones on consecutive nights, the Devils traveled up Interstate 75 for a January 11 matchup in Dayton. The third game in nine days between the squads would also go Trenton's way, as they defeated the Bombers, 5-0. The win was highlighted by a hat trick from Jeremy Akeson, the first of his career.
After their stint in Ohio, the Devils returned home to the Sovereign Bank Arena to battle the Chiefs on January 14. The Devils produced another big win, outscoring the Chiefs 6-1. Brad Snetsinger was a key component in the Devils' win, notching two goals and two assists.
Trenton then took two of three games going into the All-Star Break. On January 21, two of Trenton's top defensemen, Ryan Gunderson and Matt Cohen, traveled to Reading, PA to represent the Devils in the ECHL's All-Star Game. Gunderson and Cohen assisted their teammates in the American Conference's 11-5 win over the National Conference.
Coming out of the All-Star Break, the Devils continued their winning ways, as they defeated the Jackals and Chiefs on consecutive nights. The latter win was their ninth in the month of January, a new team record.
The Devils closed the remainder of their January schedule by splitting a pair of games in Elmira. Trenton finished January with a record of 10-3-0, the best January in team history. The Devils outscored their opponents, 61-29, with the offensive onslaught spear-headed by Jeff Prough (7g-7a) and Eric Castonguay (4g-10a), both of whom tallied 14 points throughout the month. Riding high on a successful January, the Trenton Devils looked to carry their consistency and offensive potency into February and the remainder of the season.
