THE WEEK IN REVIEW

SOUTH CAROLINA OVERCOMES DEVILS, 6-3

After a strong first period, the Devils could not recover from a flurry of second period goals by the South Carolina Stingrays, dropping the contest 6-3 Wednesday night at the Sovereign Bank Arena.  The Devils came into the game riding a three-game sweep of the Elmira Jackals and looking to continue their win streak.  The team utilized all of its healthy players to deal with the losses of Jeff Prough and Chris Murray who were called up to Lowell on Tuesday.  Trenton got on the board early with a highlight reel-worthy goal from Brett Wilson at 5:03 in the first.  After a pass from Tim Kunes, Wilson slid the puck between his own legs and under the stick of Stingray goaltender Todd Ford.  Just over five minutes later, the Devils took a 2-0 lead when Scott Bartlett redirected a strong Justin Coutu wrist shot.  At the end of the first, the Devils failed to convert on a five-on-three power play that lasted just under two minutes.  The Stingrays reversed the pace with a four goal second period, including three scores in the first six minutes.  Kory Nagy cut into the Stingray lead with a goal in the third, but it was not enough to overcome two more South Carolina tallies and the Devils lost 6-3.

ROYALS COMPLETE COMEBACK WIN

The Devils controlled the pace of the game and the scoreboard for two periods on Friday night at Reading's Sovereign Center but three Reading goals in the third period completed the Royals' 3-2 comeback win.  The Devils converted two of their six power play opportunities to grab a two goal lead.  Dan Eves scored his third goal of the season at 10:23 in the first, finding the puck in the crease after Brett Wilson centered to Mike Harder from the left wing.  Harder found the back of the net for the Devils at 2:41 in the third when he roofed the puck over Royal netminder Andrew Engelage.  Less than two minutes later, the momentum shifted when Scott Fletcher put the Royals on the board after a quick feed from behind the net to beat goalie Dave Caruso.  The Royals notched two more goals in a span of six minutes and nine seconds to take a 3-2 lead.  The Devils launched a spirited onslaught in the last minutes of the game but the Royals held on for the 3-2 win.

DEVILS LOSE SHOOTOUT THRILLER, 4-3

The Reading Royals swept the home-and-home series Saturday night at the Sovereign Bank Arena, handing Trenton its third straight loss in a dramatic 4-3 shootout win.  The Devils once again started out strong.  Defenseman Justin Pender, playing in his first game since Halloween, intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and flung it ahead to forward Brett Wilson whose sudden left wing wrist shot gave the Devils the first goal of the game at 6:36 in the first.  With Dinos Stamoulis in the box with an interference major and a game misconduct at 18:55, Reading took advantage of a lackadaisical Trenton power play to score a short-handed goal to tie the contest.  A scoreless second period was highlighted by nine different minor penalties.  At 6:03 in the third, birthday boy Andy Thomas blasted one from the left point, scoring his first ECHL goal to put the Devils ahead 3-2.  Royal Olivier Labelle evened the score at 8:37 in the third after banging in a loose puck.  After a back-and-forth overtime period, the gamed headed to a shootout.  Labelle was the only player to score in the shootout, beating Gerald Coleman in the final round with a blast just underneath the crossbar to secure the Reading victory.  The Devils picked up one point and remain in third place (5-5-1-2, 13 pts), three points behind second place Reading (7-4-1-1, 16 pts) and five points behind East-leading Elmira (8-3-1-1, 18pts).
